Purvis Hebert

Purvis Hebert, 91, passed away peacefully at his home on December 15, 2021. Visitation will be at Ascension Funeral Home Wednesday, December 22, 2021, from 5-9 pm with rosary at 6 pm. Visitation will also be at St. Theresa of Avila Church in Gonzales La. on December 23, 2021, from 9-11 am with mass to follow. Born on May 10, 1930, Purvis was preceded in death by his parents Lucien Hebert and Eugenie Babin Hebert, two brothers Adam Hebert and Armand Hebert, two sisters Mildred Hebert Gautreaux and Audrey Hebert Duplessis, his wife of 60 years Nora Tracy Hebert, and many close friends and extended family. Purvis was valedictorian of Dutchtown High School class of 1947, graduated in Business Administration from LSU, and served 2 years in the US Army during the Korean War. He retired from the Hansen’s Disease Center in Carville La after 33 years of government service. An active member of St Theresa of Avila parish, Purvis served as an usher and head/member of various church and school committees. He was active in Boy Scouts with his son, a member of the American Legion Post 81, and the Sportsman League. Purvis and his wife Nora were also members of Bayou Square Rounds, La Square Dance Association, and the National Square Dance/Campers Association. He enjoyed speaking Cajun French, bowling, fishing, bird watching, building anything, mowing the lawn, and most of all his family.

Purvis is survived by a daughter, Trina Hebert Landry (Richard) and a son Joseph Paul Hebert (Wendy), grandchildren Tisha Carr and Scott Landry, step-grandchildren Matthew Shirk and Lauren Shirk, great-grandchildren Rachael Steward and Jaspin Carr, and a great-great-grandson Dustin Steward. He was the favorite uncle and father figure to multiple generations of nieces and nephews. Purvis requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of his wife Nora or to the donor’s favorite charity. Special thanks to Gwen Zeigler and family, St. Joseph’s Hospice for their care, his caregivers Teri, Anita, Barbara, and Karen as well as all the family members who helped him (or had his help) with various projects that enriched the quality and quantity of his life.
