Melvin "Marion" James Harris passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015 at 7:30 am at the age of 68 years old at his home in Baton Rouge, LA. Mel was born on August 27, 1946, in Pineville, Louisiana, to Elton and Mary Barbin Harris. He attended Cottonport High School after which he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served twelve and a half years. During this time, Mel received numerous awards and commendations for outstanding service to his country. Mel worked and retired from the Allied Chemical Plant and soon became active in Real Estate. He owned and operated a mortgage company and title company. He was also a commissioned officer of the state and served as a Notary Public in real estate transactions for other mortgage companies. Mel often instructed classes in real estate and in mortgage rules and ethics. He enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed nature and his little dogs. His greatest joy was spending time with family. He was a very wonderful and special person loved by all who knew him. Mel was especially close to Morgan and Samantha Badame. These sweet young ladies, including Danielle Nickens, shared a lot of time with him and gave so much loving devotion. He was also very close to his grandson, James Harris, who shared his love of hunting.
He leaves behind his life-long partner of 33 years, Lorraine H. Nickens, daughters, Stephanie R. Harris, Alma Harris Elliott and husband Roy Elliott, and son, Sean Malone Harris, as well as his "step-children" Lonnie Nickens, Rocky Nickens, Lance Nickens and Lori Nickens Badame, sisters, Pauline Mason, Alice Book, Carol Tassin, Carmen Williams, Lillie Craig and Shelia Bordelon, numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many special friends.
