Mary Lou Cowan Holeman Zolecki peacefully passed away on January 30, 2026, at Rosewood Assisted Living in Lafayette, at the age of 89. She was surrounded by care and comfort in her final days and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Preceded in death by her parents Albert and Iva Cowan. Her brother Harvey Cowan. Her first husband and father of her children Thomas Edward Holeman Jr. Second husband is Richard Zolecki.
Mary Lou leaves behind her loving children, Debbie (Ramah) Guess, Leslie (Chip) Peltier, and Tim (Cathy) Holeman. She was a proud sister of brother James Cowan and devoted grandmother to Jason (Casey) Peltier, Misty Guess, Talitha (Jeff) Bertrand, April (Zack) Buteaux, Lindsey Peltier, Cassie (Tyson) Barnett, Meagan (Daniel) Templet, Dane Holeman, and Daniel (Meagan) Peltier. She was also blessed with many great-grandchildren: Stephen Peltier, Halli (Andrey’) Castro, Krislyn Bertrand, Justin Buteaux, Gage Buteaux, Brooklyn Vice, Kadence Bertrand, Barrett Vice, Logan Barnett, Sadie Buteaux, Kanon Bertrand, Kalebe Barnett, Liam Peltier, Katelyn Templet, Makenna Templet, and Declan Peltier. Her legacy continues through her great-great-grandchild, Evangeline Rey Castro. Mary Lou is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, and dear friends who held a special place in her heart.
Serving as pallbearers will be Daniel Templet, Dane Holeman, Logan Barnett, Barrett Vice, Kanon Bertrand, and Tyson Barnett. Honorary pallbearer will be Kalebe Barnett and Daniel Peltier.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at Ascension Funeral Home, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing until the funeral service at 12:00 noon in the funeral home chapel. Deacon Gene White will officiate the service, with special music provided by Alaina Duncan. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Prairieville.
The family would like to sincerely thank Rosewood Assisted Living in Lafayette and her special caregivers for the kindness and compassion shown to Mary Lou. A heartfelt thank you is also extended to Hospice of Acadiana, the doctors at Ochsner in Baton Rouge and Lafayette, Dr. Tray Martin, Med Assist in New Iberia, First Option in Lafayette, Spanish Moss Workshop of Abbeville for the beautiful casket work, Gene White of First Baptist Church of Gonzales, and Ascension Funeral Home of Gonzales. We truly could not have provided her with such loving care without the support and dedication of each and every team member.
