Leon Geismar, Sr.

A native of Geismar and a resident of Gonzales, he was born June 16, 1926, and passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at his home. Visitation at Ascension Funeral Home, 426 W. New River St., Gonzales, on Friday, March 18, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church, Gonzales, on Saturday at 1 p.m. Burial in Hope Haven Cemetery, La. 30, Gonzales. Survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred Knox Geismar sister, Leona G. Stamler children, Marie Louise Geismar, Suzanne G. George, Leon S. Geismar Jr. and wife Patty, and Gerard Knox Geismar 10 grandchildren, 12 greatgrandchildren special friends, Andrew Glover and wife Mary, and their three children. Our hearts also give thanks to his caretaker, Emma Turner. Preceded in death by his parents, Leon S. and Evelyn Vessier Geismar sister, Florette Neuwirth and two sonsinlaw, Franklin W. Martin and Edward L. George. Pallbearers will be Tim George, Mike Boudreaux, Jerry Hitzman, Dean Millet, Jake McCrory and Andrew Glover. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Daigle, Felix Mendoza, Leonce Millet, Nelson Roth, Roy Marchand Jr., Cynthia Stafford and Paige Speligene Babin. He was a veteran of the Korean War and World War II. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, two battle stars in European Theater of Operation, and the World War II Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a graduate of Ascension Catholic High School and LSU. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, past Grand Knight of Council 2657, past district deputy, state chairman, regional director and a retired insurance representative for Knights of Columbus. He helped form St. Mark Catholic Church, the Father Clement Council of St. Amant and the French Settlement Council. He helped organize the MDA telethon for the Knights of Columbus. He was a retired member of the Ascension Parish School Board, past president of the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce, past president and member of the Jambalaya Festival and was chosen Jambalaya King IV. In 1987, he was honored for his service to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association for serving on the executive committee for six years. He was also honored as Super Spartan and East Ascension Highs No. 1 fan and spent 46 years in the press box at Gonzales High School and East Ascension High School. He was one of the first inductees into the Gonzales Hall of Fame, owner of Progressive Stores in Gonzales and a member of St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church.
