Mr. K passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at 10:20 a.m. at Magnolia Assisted Living in Gonzales, LA. He was 89 years old and a native and resident of Gonzales. He was a retired Sergeant Major of the United States Marine Corps with 23 years of service. He served during the Korean War and Vietnam War. He received the Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he worked at Freeport-McMoran Inc. and Agrico Chemical Company as a safety supervisor. After these two careers, he served as the first Emergency Management Coordinator for the Office of Emergency Preparedness for Ascension Parish. Visiting will be at Ascension Funeral Home, 426 W. New River St., Gonzales, on Monday, October 16, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until service at 12:00 noon conducted by Pastor Malcolm Richard. Burial with full military honors will be at Ficklin Cemetery. Survived by his daughter, Trudi Sheets and husband, Rodney; son, Michael P. Shannon and companion, Linda Caisse; three grandchildren, Erin Sheets, Reid Sheets, and Jeffrey Shannon and wife, Stacy; and four great grandchildren, Blake Sheets, Kaylie Sheets, Sarah Shannon, and Cameron Shannon. Preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Yvonne Shannon; grandson, Wesley Sheets; and his mother, Eunice Millet Kuepferle. Pallbearers will be Michael Shannon, Rodney Sheets, Reid Sheets, Blake Sheets, Jeffrey Walker, and Larry Moran.
