James Allen (Jimmy) Bankhead, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024 after a brief illness. He was born on May 9, 1940, in Port Arthur, Texas, to James and Hattie Bankhead. In 1946, he moved with his family to Baton Rouge, where he grew up and resided most of his life.
He graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1958. He spent most of his working years at Precision Sampling, where he dedicated four decades of service.
In his youth, James founded the band Jimmy and the Offbeats, which became a local favorite in the 60s later evolving into the band Isosceles Popsicle. A gifted singer and guitarist, he eventually set aside his musical ambitions to focus on work and family.
James enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved family get togethers. He also enjoyed working projects around the house, having remodeled two homes with his wife Peggy.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Stephenson Bankhead; his children, Jimmy Bankhead (Carin), Mike Bankhead (Cheryl), and Jeff Bankhead; stepchildren, Julie Stephens, Mary Helen Miller (Mike), and Floyd (Buddy) Cox; nine grandchildren, six step grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hattie Bankhead, and his sisters, Peggy Bonnecarere, Patsy Coxe, and Polly Capello.
Jimmy will be remembered for his musical talent, dedication to his work, love for the outdoors, and the care he showed for his family and home.
The family would like to thank Clarity Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
Arrangements are yet to be finalized but planning a small graveside service with immediate family.
