Florence Gates

Florence Irene Gates, commonly known as "Rene" died at the age of 60 on the morning of Friday, January 15, 2016 in Gonzales. LA. She had a very sweet spirit and loved to laugh and laughed often. She had a child-like enthusiasm about life and loved her nieces and nephews very much. She was born November 7, 1955 in Albuquerque, New Mexico the daughter of Durwood Royce Gates, Sr. and Julia Gayle Gates. She lived the majority of her life in the Baton Rouge, LA area. She is survived her brother, Durward Royce Gates, Jr. and wife, Mary Jane Walker Gates and their children, Walker Gates and Meredith Gates, all of Lafayette, Louisiana; brother, Milton Randle Gates "Randy" and his wife, Wendy Whittington Gates and their children, Leland Gates and Danni Gates, all of Zachary, Louisiana; sister, Rebekah Gates Robertson "Reba" and her husband, Mickey Lee Robertson and their children, Logan Robertson and Cameron Robertson, all of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and aunt, Barbara Way Sellers, Natchez, Mississippi native. She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandmother, Ellen Rebekah Meschutt, and her aunt, Ruby Ellen Meschutt. Services will be Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Washington United Methodist Church in Natchez, Mississippi, with refreshments to follow after the service at the church. Services will be conducted by Rev. Robert N. Armstrong. Visitation will be 1:00 pm Wednesday at the church until service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Washington United Methodist Church in Natchez, Mississippi. A Celebration of Life Ceremony in honor of those who cared for her, will be held Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Ascension Oaks Nursing Home located at 711 W. Cornerview Rd., Gonzales, LA 70737, with refreshments to follow. The family invites everyone to join this celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Hospice of Baton Rouge.
